A range of industrial servers designed for mission-critical projects

In industrial, defence, aerospace, transport, energy, telecommunications and information systems environments, a server must do more than simply provide computing power. It must remain maintainable, integrable, stable over time and suited to the physical constraints of its environment.

This is precisely the positioning of the OPALE V2 range. It combines 19-inch rack-mountable chassis, Intel processor platforms, PCIe expansion capabilities, local and remote monitoring functions, and a high level of system customisation.

The objective is clear: to provide a reliable computing platform for embedded, industrial or mission-critical applications that require more than a standard PC.

The range comprises three complementary products:

  • OPALE V2, a 4U industrial server based on the PICMG 1.3 form factor, designed for highly expandable configurations.
  • OPALE V2 Compact, a 2U industrial server optimised for the SWaP-C trade-off: size, weight, power consumption and cost.
  • µOPALE V2, a shallow 1U rack-mountable server, intended for integrations where compactness is a priority.

Why choose an OPALE V2 industrial server?

An OPALE V2 industrial server is designed for projects that require a more controlled computing platform than a standard IT server. The range is designed to be integrated into technical systems characterised by long life cycles, demanding environmental conditions and frequent customisation requirements.

The main benefits of the range are based on four key features: modularity, robustness, monitoring and long-term reliability.

Modularity allows the platform to be adapted to the project’s requirements: number of PCIe slots, storage, interfaces, connectors, power supply, processor configuration, I/O or mechanical design. This flexibility is essential for system integrators who need to integrate acquisition cards, network cards, graphics cards, communication modules, FPGA/GPGPU solutions or specific industrial peripherals.

Ruggedness is achieved through the use of rack-mountable chassis designed for industrial applications, featuring reinforced steel, monitored ventilation, mechanical card retention, thermal management and environmental testing in accordance with the MIL-STD standards specified on the product data sheets. OPALE V2 servers are therefore suited to demanding environments where vibration, shock, temperature, humidity or noise must be taken into account from the design stage.

Monitoring is also at the heart of the range. The platforms incorporate hardware monitoring, watchdog functions, fan control, alarm reporting, log files, network management, and local or remote administration services. This approach facilitates preventive maintenance, anomaly detection and the reduction of downtime.

Finally, long-term sustainability is a strategic priority. ECRIN Systems supports projects over the long term, handling system development, integration, customisation and configuration monitoring. For OEMs and system integrators, this continuity ensures secure deployments, limited production runs, product upgrades and ongoing maintenance.

How do you choose the right OPALE V2 industrial server?

The choice between OPALE V2, OPALE V2 Compact and µOPALE V2 depends primarily on the available space, the number of boards to be integrated, the required level of PCIe expansion and maintenance requirements.

👉 If the project requires the integration of numerous full-length cards, for example for data acquisition, vision, FPGA/GPGPU computing or a complex test bench, OPALE V2 is the most suitable model. Its 4U chassis and backplane with up to 14 slots offer the greatest integration capacity in the range.

👉 If the project needs to maintain good expansion capacity whilst reducing the footprint, OPALE V2 Compact offers a solid compromise. Its 2U chassis, configurable backplane and monitoring functions make it a suitable solution for systems where volume, weight, power consumption and cost must be kept under control.

👉 If compactness is the main constraint, µOPALE V2 allows an industrial server to be integrated into a shallow 1U form factor. It is suitable for space-constrained racks, telecoms equipment, test systems, control stations or applications requiring a compact and durable rack-mountable platform.

Industrial server or rugged server: check that it offers the right level of robustness

Before choosing an OPALE V2 model, it is important to assess the actual level of stress imposed by your operating environment. The OPALE V2 range meets the requirements for rack-mountable, configurable and durable industrial servers, particularly suited to integration into 19-inch racks, industrial systems, monitoring platforms, test benches or applications requiring PCIe expansion.

However, if your project involves more severe field conditions — shocks, vibrations, extreme temperatures, mobility, embedded environments or harsh operating conditions — a rugged server platform, such as the OPALE R range, may be more suitable.

This guide will help you determine more easily whether your requirements are best met by an OPALE V2 rack-mount industrial server or a rugged solution from the OPALE-R range.

A modified COTS approach to meet OEM requirements

The strength of the OPALE V2 range lies in its customisability. ECRIN Systems can tailor the mechanical design, hardware configuration, interfaces, connectors, I/O, software functions, front panel, LEDs, front and rear access points, and the product’s visual identity.

This approach is particularly useful for OEMs and system integrators who wish to integrate an industrial server under their own brand, control its configuration, ensure a secure product lifecycle, or have a solution tailored to a specific application.

Customisation is not limited to appearance. It can cover processor configuration, memory, storage, backplane type, expansion cards, power supplies, connectors or monitoring functions. The aim is to deliver a system that meets field constraints, integration requirements and maintenance needs.

Industrial servers designed for long-term maintenance and support

In an industrial or mission-critical project, the true cost of a server is not limited to its purchase price. It is also necessary to take into account availability, maintenance, system downtime, configuration changes, obsolescence and the ability to replicate a platform over time.

The OPALE V2 range addresses this with active monitoring functions, log files, alarms, hardware monitoring, fan control, a watchdog, remote administration via Intel AMT depending on the configuration, and system support from ECRIN Systems.

This level of control is essential for projects spanning several years, particularly in sectors where re-certification is costly, configurations must remain stable, and systems must be maintainable without disruption.
