ECRIN Systems, a French designer and manufacturer of ruggedised systems, presents µTOPAZE, a ruggedised mission computer in 3U VPX format, designed for high-speed signal processing and computationally intensive applications in the most demanding environments.

Developed for radar, sonar, EWR, C4ISR, AI and on-board processing applications, µTOPAZE is aimed at systems requiring a heterogeneous computing architecture capable of integrating processors, GPGPUs and FPGAs within a compact, ruggedised and configurable platform.

A 3U VPX platform designed for mission-critical applications

µTOPAZE is based on a 5-slot VPX backplane incorporating, in particular, an Intel processor slot, an NVIDIA GPGPU slot, a slot configurable for a GPGPU, FPGA or Intel processor, a 400 W VITA 62 power supply, and a filtering board compliant with MIL-STD-1275E / MIL-STD-461 with internal M.2 storage.

Depending on the configuration, the system can incorporate an 8-core Intel® Xeon® W-11865MRE processor or a 10-core Intel® Xeon® D-1848TER processor, with 32 GB of memory. For graphics processing and parallel computing, µTOPAZE supports NVIDIA GPU solutions, including the NVIDIA RTX PRO™ 4000 Blackwell GPU or the NVIDIA RTX™ 2000 Ada GPU, with frame grabber functions and HD-SDI video interfaces.

This platform is designed to meet the requirements of advanced embedded processing, particularly for signal analysis, video capture, parallel computing and real-time embedded applications.

Connectivity, storage and modularity to support system integration

µTOPAZE offers a range of interfaces suited to embedded environments: DisplayPort, Ethernet, 10GBASE-SR/LR, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, RS-232 / RS-422, CAN bus, audio, discrete I/O, as well as an expansion slot for a VPX-3U FPGA + FMC card, I/O card or QMC.

The system also incorporates several storage options, including an M.2 SATA slot on the SBC board, a second M.2 SATA slot on the filter board and a 2.5-inch SATA SSD accessible from the front panel, designed to withstand up to 100,000 insertions and removals.

Its compact form factor, measuring 216 x 226 x 140 mm with MIL-DTL-38999 connectors, and its weight of up to 11 kg depending on the configuration, make it a solution well-suited to the SWaP-C constraints of embedded platforms.

Designed for harsh environments

µTOPAZE is designed to operate in demanding conditions. The platform supports an operating temperature range of -40°C to +55°C, depending on the configuration and cooling system, and a storage temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.

The system features an IP67 protection rating, MIL-DTL-38999 lockable military circular connectors, a +28 VDC power supply with an input range of +16 VDC to +36 VDC, and an EMI filtering board compliant with DO-160, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1275 and MIL-STD-704.

µTOPAZE is also designed to withstand severe environmental conditions: altitudes of up to 50,000 ft, humidity, salt mist, sand and dust, shock and vibration in accordance with the standards specified in the product documentation.

A qualified and customisable COTS approach

With µTOPAZE computer, ECRIN Systems offers a pre-integrated, pre-tested and qualified COTS solution, designed to accelerate the integration of critical embedded systems whilst reducing project risks.

The platform forms part of ECRIN Systems’ Modified COTS approach, enabling the solution to be tailored to the specific requirements of programmes: hardware configuration, connectivity, integration of specific boards, choice of interfaces, product lifecycle management and long-term support.

This adaptability provides integrators and clients with a robust, scalable and controlled technical foundation, whilst ensuring the long-term availability of the systems.
