32 isolated digital outputs in a compact QMC module

The TQMC604 expands the TEWS Technologies embedded I/O portfolio with a QMC mezzanine designed for systems requiring a high number of isolated digital outputs within a compact form factor.

The single-width VITA 93.0 QMC module measures 26 × 78.25 mm and connects to the host through a PCI Express Revision 2.1 x1 interface. FRU hardware definition information is stored in an onboard EEPROM.

With 32 outputs on a single mezzanine, the TQMC604 provides a dense digital-control function for QMC-based embedded platforms. The wider technology and available I/O functions are covered in ECRIN Systems' overview of the VITA 93 QMC portfolio.

5–36 V outputs rated up to 0.15 A per channel

All 32 outputs operate from a 5 to 36 V DC supply and deliver up to 0.15 A continuous current per channel.

Maximum output update time is 4 µs.

These characteristics make the TQMC604 suitable for compact digital-control functions within industrial embedded systems where multiple isolated output channels are required.

Four galvanically isolated groups of eight outputs

The 32 channels are galvanically isolated from the host system.

They are arranged into four groups of eight outputs, with each group electrically isolated from the others.

This arrangement allows several external circuit groups to be separated while remaining integrated on the same QMC mezzanine.

High-side or low-side switching by group

Each group of eight outputs can be software configured for either: high-side switching or low-side switching.

The switching mode applies to the entire group of eight, rather than being selected independently for every individual channel.

This is an important distinction when comparing the TQMC604 with other digital-output QMC modules.

Integrated output protection

The output drivers provide protection against:

  • short circuit;
  • overcurrent;
  • thermal overload;
  • overvoltage up to 65 V;
  • reverse-polarity conditions.

Overcurrent protection includes a minimum 175 µs blanking time.

Programmable hardware watchdog

A programmable hardware watchdog supervises the output function.

If the expected watchdog trigger fails, all 32 outputs are automatically cleared.

The combination of galvanic isolation, output density and hardware watchdog also supports embedded systems targeting Defense, Aerospace & Security applications. TEWS explicitly identifies industrial, military and embedded deployments for the TQMC604.

Software support

The TDRV024-SW software family provides support for:

  • Green Hills INTEGRITY;
  • VxWorks;
  • Windows;
  • Linux;
  • QNX.

Other operating systems can be addressed separately.

Air- and conduction-cooled variants

Two versions are available:

  • TQMC604-10R-A – air cooled
  • TQMC604-10R-H – conduction cooled

Both provide the same 32 isolated 5–36 V / 0.15 A digital outputs and operate from -40°C to +85°C.

Storage temperature is also -40°C to +85°C, with 5–95% non-condensing humidity.

From a QMC module to a complete I/O subsystem

The TQMC604 requires a compatible QMC carrier or host platform.

  • For CompactPCI Serial systems, the TCPS210 provides up to three single-width QMC sites and routes QMC I/O to rear connectors.
  • For PCI Express systems, the TPCE210 dual-QMC carrier provides a direct integration path for one or two QMC modules.

The TQMC604 can also be incorporated into ECRIN Systems' COTS and Modified COTS approach, combining the I/O function, carrier, host computer and additional boards required by the application.

For broader system requirements, project definition and integration can include electrical interfaces, carrier selection, thermal constraints and complete system configuration.

Turn 32 isolated outputs into a complete embedded I/O subsystem

Turn 32 isolated outputs into a complete embedded I/O subsystem

Choosing the right I/O module involves more than channel count. 5–36 V output levels, 0.15 A current per channel, isolated-group distribution, high-side or low-side switching, air or conduction cooling and the carrier format all need to fit the target platform.

ECRIN Systems can help define the right TQMC604 configuration and integrate it into PCI Express or CompactPCI Serial systems, combining QMC carriers, additional I/O modules and the host computing platform within a COTS or Modified COTS solution.
